What are the causes and risk factors for diabetes ?
There are no known identified causes of Diabetes whether type 1 or type 2. Some genetic predisposition has been identified, particularly for type 1 diabetes and to an extent also for type 2 diabetes. For Type 2 diabetes, factors in the environment of the person predisposed genetically act in development of diabetes. One particular factor that predisposes a person for developing type 1 diabetes is body weight, over weight person is more likely to develop diabetes. for gestestional diabetes no known cause has been identified.
For Type 1 Diabetes, risk factors are still not identified.
There are certain risk factors identified for Type 2 Diabetes:
Age — being older than 45
Weight - Overweight or obesity
Family history of diabetes — having a mother, father, brother, or sister with diabetes
Race/ethnicity — your family background is African-American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Hispanic-American/Latino, Asian-American/Pacific Islander and Native Hawaiian
Having a baby with a birth weight more than 9 pounds
Gestestional Diabetes: Having diabetes during pregnancy
High blood pressure — 140/90 mmHg or higher. Both numbers are important. If one or both numbers are usually high, you have high blood pressure.
High cholesterol — total cholesterol over 240 mg/dL
Low level of HDL (good cholesterol) and high level of triglyceride.
Sedentary life style — exercising less than 3 times a week
Impaired Glucose Tolerance indicated by an Abnormal results in a prior diabetes test
Having other health conditions that cause impaired functioning of insulin (insulin resistance), like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
Having a history of heart disease or stroke
